Visit Crested Butte in August

In my opinion, August might be the best month to visit Crested Butte.  Warm summer days will sun kiss your skin, while cool evenings give a taste of the fall air upon us.  The calendar says summer, and it sure does feel like it with average temperatures into the 70’s and low 80’s.  The nights however, will start to dip down into the mid 40’s providing that cozy mountain autumn feel.

Summer months bring almost as many visitors to Crested Butte as the winter months, however visitor numbers drop a bit in August, especially when kids go back to school.  The town is still lively, but not quite as crowded, which makes it a great month to visit Crested Butte.

The first week in August provides for one of the best art events in the summer featuring the annual Crested Butte Art Festival, which just celebrated its 47th year.  The Creative Arts District on Historic Elk Avenue is where over 165 jury-selected artist from around the world have booths set up displaying all kinds of artistic work.  The downtown scene, along with the mountain backdrop make for a fun stroll through the festival, all while enjoying impressive art.

August also provides for incredible biking and hiking trails.  In fact, Crested Butte is known for legendary biking where all levels can enjoy the mountain trails around town.  Hiking is just as glorious to get out into the mountains and enjoy beautiful aspen forests, gentle meandering streams and views for miles.  While you are out among the streams and rivers, cast a fly rod to see if those legendary rainbow and brown trout will take a bite.  Fishing in August is also at its prime.  The snow melt has run off, which has allowed for a steady, slower run.
