If you’re a skier, then you’ve probably been anxiously watching the weather this season. Snowfall so far has been lacking, leaving many resorts only partially open. Based on OpenSnow’s recent reporting, however, it is looking like things are about to change! With plenty of snow storms on the horizon, skiing is about to get a whole lot better.

Five major snow storms were predicted to hit Crested Butte before the start of 2022. So far, this forecast has held true! Two snow storms over Christmas weekend dumped feet of snow on the area, sending the season’s total rocketing. Another storm system rolled through Monday night, dumping even more fresh snow. This is tremendously exciting after the weak snowfall at the start of the season!

There isn’t a dry day in sight. Another storm will start today and run through tomorrow, followed shortly after by a weekend system. The current storm system is off to a solid start. In the past 24 hours, Crested Butte has seen 8 inches of snowfall. Plenty more is anticipated to fall in the coming days. Total accumulation by the end of the weekend should be between 10 and 40 inches

This is the storm cycle that many Colorado resorts have been waiting for to get ski season properly rolling. The snow will help resorts improve their water supply and get more terrain open. Most (if not all) terrain should be open by New Years, so if you have a ski trip coming up, then you are safe to start getting excited!

For more on Crested Butte’s snowfall, see OpenSnow!

It’s time to hit the slopes! Plan your next ski trip today!

These are the days we dream of. SNOW, SNOW, SNOW and more snow! This last system brought 12 inches in 48 hours! Looking forward, we are seeing a minimum of 1-2 inches dropping daily through mid week. It is piling up here in Crested Butte so put on your boots and get out there this weekend. We will see you on the hill.

At the Weather Channel  they are predicting a storm cycle out of the northwest beginning on Sunday and moving south, followed by a second storm cycle out of the southwest beginning on Tuesday and moving northeast. You can find the predicted snowfall of these storm cycles at our Snow Report here

Come play in the powder this weekend right here at Crested Butte Ski Resort. There are currently 115 of the 121 open with several black runs off North Face, Front Side, and High Lift still to open. Keep an eye out for this new terrain just around the corner when the snow settles.

If you aren’t much of a skier or looking for another way to enjoy the fresh snow, check out a few of my previous blogs posts. Read “Unique Winter Activities” for ideas on unique ways to enjoy the snow such as a snowmobile, horseback ride, or fat bike tour. Follow that with a magical ski yurt experience.

Corduroy shredding, groomer bombing, railroad tracks… whatever you want to call it, the recent stretch of sunny weather has been perfect for carving arcing turns on-piste. With more sunny days to come, we’ve partnered with OpenSnow so we always know the right equipment to bring to make the most of whatever sort of day it is on the mountain. While the fleeting beauty of a powder day is always something worth celebrating, we’ve rounded up a few of our favorite “old-reliable” runs that make every day at Crested Butte feel special.

Paradise Bowl

Everything off of the Paradise Express lift is perfect for cruising when groomed, but Paradise Bowl comes out on top for us by featuring wide-open space and beautiful views. Pop out onto a selection of fantastic intermediate runs like Lower Forest Queen and Bear, which will all take you back to the chair for another lap, or a beverage outside at our favorite stopping spot, Paradise.

International

If you’re looking to rip big turns and pound out some top to bottom laps on fun, windy terrain, International is the run for you. Channel your inner Bode Miller and rip big turns on this groomer that simultaneously seems to go on forever, and be over in just moments as you fly across corduroy.

Lower Twister

Whether you’re enjoying the break after working your legs on Upper Twister (expert terrain) or you’ve cut over from the top of the Red Lady Express on Peanut, this green run’s journey is a great as its destination,  the Ice Bar and Uley’s Cabin!

Black Eagle

Located on the quieter East River part of the mountain, you’ll oftentimes feel like the only skier on the mountain as you carve down this mellow intermediate run featuring a nice consistent pitch and a wide area for big, carving turns.

What are your favorite runs when the sun has been shining a few days in a row? Did we miss any favorites? Let us know in the comments.

If you’re planning on coming down with a case of “Powder-itis”, Joel Gratz wants to make sure you make it count. As the founder of OpenSnow, Joel has spent his life becoming an expert on snow, from a childhood and college career ski racing, to a meteorology degree from Penn State and and a Master’s in Environmental Studies and MBA from CU Boulder. While he was in Boulder, he realized he was missing out on some of the best powder days because of the difficulty of forecasting snow accurately for Colorado’s large mountains.

Never wanting to miss another powder day, he threw his focus into studying the unique weather patterns of Colorado’s mountains, and started sharing his snow-specific forecast via an email list in 2007. Over time, his small email list evolved into a full-time job with the help of his business partner and fellow snow-obsessed meteorologist and programmer, Andrew Murray. In 2011, they created OpenSnow.com, which has evolved into the premiere snow forecasting service for skiers across the globe.

OpenSnow Helps Me Snag the Best Reservation Days

While it’s easy to get a snow REPORT on how much it has already snowed, with many resorts using a reservation system this strange ski season, you want to know how epic the snow’s going to be before it happens so you can make sure to snag the best days. Vail Resorts are running on a 7 day rolling reservation system, so you are going to want your best guess for the conditions at least a week out. OpenSnow offers trusted 10-day snow forecasts for members, so you can make sure to lock in the deepest days before  anyone else even knows a huge dump is on the radar.

As a former ski instructor now living in Denver with some job flexibility, I want to make sure if I’m going to take the morning off to get some turns in, that it’s going to be worthwhile, and that I can get my reservation in on time. I’ve opted for the All-Access subscription, that lets me see the forecast at all my favorite resorts 10 days out. OpenSnow even gives me daily snow updates at the resorts I frequent the most.

If you’re planning to make the most of your season pass this winter, you need to check out OpenSnow. Get your powder days lined up before everyone else and you’ll be getting first tracks with me while they’re still sitting in I-70 traffic.
